BIQ Adds Computed Measure Language to Data Analysis Offering

New software feature lets users write their own powerful, custom roll-up functions for faster, more creative data analysis

Southborough, MA (PRWEB) February 17, 2010 — BIQ, a provider of innovative data and spend analysis tools for businesses seeking better visibility into corporate data, today announced the availability of a major release of its software. The product, also called BIQ, gives business analysts unprecedented freedom to explore and manipulate large datasets from a variety of sources, without IT assistance. This release extends that freedom by giving users complete control over internal rollup engine logic, all the way down to the transactional level, while retaining extremely high performance.

Eric Strovink, BIQ's CEO, commented, "User control of transactional rollup enables extraordinary functionality, like computing hundreds of thousands of crosstab cells virtually instantaneously. User control of higher-level rollups, combined with BIQ's Dynamic Reference Filters, provides for instantaneous period-on-period comparisons at all nodes, at all drill positions. Although these features have been explored by only a limited number of beta testers over the last few months, the creative use of this new functionality has been incredible."

Normally, rolling up transactional data means using some fixed function to do so, typically "sum". BIQ allows the user to replace this fixed function with his own custom-built program, thus substituting his own logic as the rollup functionality. For example, the logic could be written to accumulate a transaction's amount into a measure if the Vendor was IBM and the year was 2008; but otherwise accumulate only 80% of the amount, and only if the Cost Center was not "Central Administration". Computed Measure Language (CML) programs are written inside BIQ with the aid of a built-in Integrated Development Environment, and compiled down to highly-optimized machine instructions.

Continued Strovink, "Obviously, some users aren't comfortable with programming, so the Computed Measure Language feature is fully parameterized, allowing CML authors to provide those users with the ability to modify the function and operation of the CML logic -- for example altering the structure of what-if questions by changing parameters through a simple point-and-click interface."

In addition to CML, this release of BIQ includes major performance increases for the Dataset Loader, making it even easier and faster to create and modify BIQ datasets.
